Pair of Mid-Century Armchairs by Raffaella Crespi for Mobilia, Italy, 1960s
Located in Utrecht, NL
These Italian chairs were designed with high attention to detail, which is visible in the unique curves and clear geometric shapes. Characterized by silky lines and textures, this pair is exemplary of Italian mid-century design.
This pair feature uniquely shaped, slim legs that are held together by the cross-shaped seat. The cylindrical legs appear to stand on pillars, which gives these chairs a unique, instantly recognizable appearance. The frame gives this pair a playful, yet elegant look. The seat cushion, oval backrest and curved armrests have been reupholstered in a premium bouclé fabric. The upholstery creates a wonderful contrast and combination with the dark stained wood.
This pair was produced by the Italian manufacturer, Mobilia.
Condition:
In very good vintage condition. The chairs have been reupholstered in a premium hand-crafted fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information.

About the designer:
Born in Milan on February 27, 1929, Raffaella Crespi (1929-2011) graduated in architecture at the Politecnico di Milano in 1955. In those years, the visual characteristics and the “know-how” of what today is identified as Italian design, was born.
In 1969, she obtained her teaching qualification, and in 1980, she became professor of Architectural Technology, then of Industrial Design. Raffaella Crespi was one of the founders of the Association of Industrial Design, and of the magazines "Italia Nostra" and "Terragni" Foundation of Como. In 1973, the designer became the president of the Order of Architects of the province of Milan, a position she held until 1977. Crespi was the first woman ever to hold this position.
Meanwhile, Crespi met the Italian engineer and architect Marcello Grisotti, a professor in Bari and later at the Milan Polytechnic in Engineering, who hired her as the editor of the magazine “Architettura / Cantiere”. Crespi also curated numerous exhibitions of international importance, including the “Il teatro in the Weimar Republic” at the Palazzo delle Stelline in 1979 and “Puppets, marionettes and puppets from the eighteenth century to the present” at the Palazzo Reale in 1980.
The designer’s works were exhibited at prestigious museums around the world, such as in the MoMa in New York, in Tokyo, Paris, and London. From the year 1974, she directed the series of “Researches of Technology of Architecture” for the publisher Franco Angeli...

Brutalist Sculptural Primitive Chair 1960's-1970's Tansania
Located in Rome, IT
Koncz Vilmos (1932 – 2006). He started painting at the age of 30, using the following techniques: charcoal, pastel, oil. He has had solo exhibitions eight times in Budapest, and his works have been featured in seventeen group exhibitions worldwide. He was an experimental creator. Its more than 420 works include glass mosaics, terracotta, copper embossing and furniture carving. After his death, most of his oeuvre was “lost”. A decade and a half passed from painting to the first carvings. Middle Eastern and African culture had a major impact on his further artistic work. Traveled and created in Baghdad, Kuwait, Beirut and Tanzania. He became acquainted with the ancient folk art of the Makonde tribe, with carvings of ebony and ivory, which changed his creative career. When he made an authentic bracelet out of ivory, decorated with African motifs, the members of the tribe welcomed him among themselves. He became the tribe’s "Mister Vili." An exhibition of his painted paintings was held at the Kilimanjaro Hotel. He learned the machining of copper from the Arabs and the making of glass mosaics, and the tricks of jewelry making from the Hindus. He had forty large sculptures erected in various settlements of Hungary, mostly multi-field, made with a circular carving technique. Everything from ornaments on the table to the three-meter-high monument was found in his oeuvre. The Tiszakürt Arboretum also houses two wooden sculptures made of circular carvings: Tasso and the Tanzanian family tree. Donated works of his hometown: the 1956 headboard, the “Jászok” and “Kunok” (Old Hungarian Tribes), the “Flute”, the “Kolompolás” (Ringing the Bell) and the “Winged Altar”. In the 1980s, he also made carvings for the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden. His Ars Poetic was: “I do what I love, which drives from within, because I want to leave marks behind that I once existed and perhaps not uselessly” (2002). The term "Brutalist" originated from Le Corbusier’s Cité...

Pair of Mid Century Modern Ebonized Walnut Lounge Chairs in Holly Hunt Fabric
Located in New York, NY
This stunning and graphic pair Mid Century Modern arm chairs were realized in the United States circa 1960. They feature cylindrical legs that taper to a point at their bases. The front legs are straight, while the hind legs are slightly arched- providing the chairs with a subtle dynamism. The sides of the chairs are each composed of a single amorphic form- with a negative space that creates rests for the sitters arms and gives these pieces a wonderfully sculptural Silhouette. The chairs have been newly reupholstered in a luxurious Holly Hunt Great plains dove gray fabric called luxe trail elephant with Fine horizontal striations. These chairs are a study in the simple beauty of first rate Mid Century design, explaining why American modernism appears as timeless and compelling today as it did more than 60 years ago when these chairs were first created. Their clean modernist lines and refined palate ensure that they would be a winning addition to any style of interior from Classic Mid-Century Modern to contemporary. They have been newly restored to mint condition and newly reupholstered in Holly Hunt fabric...
