René Gabriel Reconstruction French Midcentury Armchairs

About the Item

Originally designed in 1946 by the renowned French designer René Gabriel, this pair of lounge chairs is a refined example of the post-war French reconstruction movement. With a focus on functionality, clean lines, and a minimalist aesthetic, these chairs reflect the era's emphasis on practical yet beautifully crafted furniture. René Gabriel's signature design language is evident in the sharp angles and geometric structure, particularly in the distinctive back legs, which set the tone for the entire silhouette. The chairs’ generous proportions, ergonomic recline, and extended seat depth provide both style and exceptional comfort. As part of a careful and faithful reconstruction, the cushions have been remade and reupholstered in premium-quality alpaca fabric in a refined crème shade by Bisson Bruneel. This luxurious textile enhances the understated elegance of the chairs while ensuring durability and comfort. A rare and sophisticated piece of French mid-century design, this set is a perfect blend of history, craftsmanship, and timeless aesthetics—ideal for collectors and design enthusiasts alike. Condition These lounge chairs are in very good vintage condition, with wear consistent with age and use. They have been carefully refinished and reupholstered while preserving their original character. The wooden frames show a beautiful patina, adding to their authenticity and charm. Minor imperfections may be present, consistent with the natural aging of the materials. AMS Gallery offers a re-upholstery service in a fabric of choice at the customer's request. The renovation and upholstery process is carried out by experienced craftsmen with great attention to originality, ensuring that each piece retains its value and is ready for many more years of use. Dimensions Width: 72.5 cm / 28.5 in Depth: 85 cm / 33.5 in Height: 91.5 cm / 36 in Seat Height with a pillow: 43 cm / 17 in About the Designer René Gabriel (1890–1950) was a key figure in French modernist design, known for his role in the post-war reconstruction movement. As president of the Société des Artistes Décorateurs (1944–1947) and a professor at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, he played a crucial role in shaping mid-century French design. His work was characterized by a commitment to functional, accessible, and well-crafted furniture that prioritized simple, clean lines over excessive ornamentation. In 1949, he was honored as a Knight of the Legion of Honour for his contributions to the field. His designs remain highly sought after for their timeless appeal and historical significance.
