About the Item

Set of 6 Louis XVI armchairs, so-called "a la Reine" in French due to their large structure. Our set of seats is a very rare version of traditional French armchairs, so-called "fauteuils a chassis" where both backrests and seats are removable (see last pictures). In 18th century, such seats used to be the most refined production among the living room furniture : the removable parts could be adapted to each season : velvet in winter, light silk in summer. Elegant medallion-shaped backrest, refined acanthus, roses and flowers deeply sculpted patterns, perfect proportions. Early Louis XVI period Parisian production circa 1775. 4 pieces are signed P. Brizard (the other 2 are also by Brizard, although not stamped) : Pierre Brizard, Sulpice Brizard's younger brother. Pierre Brizard became a master in 1762. On top of being a seat maker, he also was a sculptor and made his sculptures himself - with taste and carving with a very deep relief, just like our seats. Each seat has a unique flowers pattern on the upper part of the backrest (other pictures on demand). On such seats, the structure in which the cushions are placed are unique too : a number is engraved below to match cushions easily. One of our seats is engraved "16", which means that there were at least 16 similar seats in the original living room : we can imagine that the castle or hotel particulier our seats come from was a very luxurious and elegant one. There are 6 seats left, which is a very rare set to find on the antique market. We choose to cover this exceptional set with a Tassinari & Chatel green silk, pineapple pattern (traditional horsehair inside) : a prestigious fabric for uncommon seats. We can find this kind of match in great French collections in early 21st century.
