Set of 6 Solid Quartersawn Oak Arm or Dining Chairs in Black Leather by Gunlocke

About the Item

Designed and made in the 1970s by American manufacturer Gunlocke, this rare set of chairs features very high quality construction and materials. Made of solid oak, the wood for these chairs was cut in an unconventional manner. Instead of cutting with the grain like many other pieces, these were cut diagonal to the grain. This provides a super interesting perspective of the wood that's rarely seen in other pieces. Construction is very good. The chair is assembled with box joints, which are similar to dovetail joints, but lend a more rustic look. To secure the joints, Gunlocke used dowels, which were then sanded smooth. Notice the subtle design cues across the chairs, such as the slightly angled rear legs and the tasteful curve and grain pattern in the back. In very good vintage and original condition. Very sturdy and solid chairs. Signed beneath the seat with a metal label on one of the legs. Interestingly, they appear to have come out of the Princeton University main campus in Princeton, NJ.
