Sirocco teak armchair, Arne Norell, Sweden, 1964

About the Item

Like a wooden alter ego of the Wassily chair by Marcel Breuer. Indeed, even if Scandinavian designers adhere to the simplicity of the form and line of modernist furniture, they nevertheless reject the coldness of materials used for mass industry such as metal or plastic. The Sirocco armchair by Arne Norell (1917-1971), crafted by hand, is full of details that are as decorative as they are useful. The choice of teak and beautiful leather canvases gives the whole a timeless elegance to suit all interiors. This is also their credo: “We make furniture for you and your loved ones that you will enjoy for a long time”. As for the designer, who left prematurely at the age of 60, he founded his company in 1954, which his wife would manage after his death. It was in 1993 that their daughter took the reins to perpetuate the legacy. Recognized internationally, Norell furniture received several distinctions, notably in 1973 the prize for “centerpiece of the year” for its Ari armchair.
