About the Item
The term Swedish Modern was quickly established as a reinterpretation of modernity during the 1940s, and the new Swedish Modern style, early and square functionalism was replaced by a freer and more artistic ideal. These qualities define this pair of armchairs, completed by the lovely upholstery and its vivid colour.
The Swedish Modern style is so popular because it speaks to both our tidy tendencies and our desire to live in inviting and comfortable settings. These armchairs have a very precise, defined outline, enhanced by the wooden lines framing the upholstered body on the arms, and by the beautiful trimming running down from the back to the armrests. Like the shape, the upholstery is tight, and impeccably done. Yet instead of being uptight, these chairs still exude warmth and the Scandinavian cosiness we tend to seek for our homes. The curving back and armrests are welcoming, and unmistakeable of the era’s design in Sweden. The tapered legs complement the design by their simplicity.
Swedish Modern made the Swedish form widely known. This second generation of 'functionalists' affirmed craftsmanship, tradition, and history. The new style thus signalled both status, unassuming and sensitive awareness right up to the 1960s. The country had a second international breakthrough at the end of the 1930s - under the term Swedish Modern, and a third one that is happening right now, and looking at this pair of armchairs, it is unlikely to end anytime soon.

European Upholstered Art Deco Lounge Chairs, Europe 1930s
Located in Utrecht, NL
In the design-wise glamorous world of 1930s Europe, exceptional seating pieces emerged and still embody Art Deco elegance. These lounge chairs, with their distinctive features, exude the spirit of the era and remain stylish examples of this influential design movement.
The most striking aspect of these chairs is their characteristic, scalloped backs, which add a touch of opulence and Art Deco flair. With their symmetrical, curved lines, these type of backs were hallmarks of Art Deco furniture design, epitomizing the aesthetic of the period. The large, enveloping backrests dictate the shape of these chairs, as they visually form most of the structure. Similarly to club chairs - that are favourites for Art Deco enthusiasts - these chairs’ arms constitute a single piece with the backs resulting in a wide design profile. The chairs feature fully upholstered bodies, embracing the era’s ruling principle of luxurious comfort without sacrificing style. The upholstery has a rich green texture with multicoloured, curly strands that add a tactile dimension to the design. This tactile quality was characteristic of Art Deco design, as designers of the time were keen on exploring different materials and textures to create visually stunning and sensorially pleasing pieces. The well-chosen material thus cleverly highlights the curves and creates extra depth. The chairs' solid wood legs provide gentle contrast to the textile, while also providing a sense of stability and durability, ensuring that this pair will keep standing the test of time. Art Deco design often incorporated geometric and angular elements, however, in these lounge chairs, there is a harmonious blend of curves and straight lines, resulting in a balanced and inviting aesthetic.
With their scalloped backs, symmetrical curves, green upholstery, and rich texture, this pair represents some of the best qualities of Art Deco era furniture...

European Mid-Century Modern Upholstered Lounge Chairs, Europe, circa 1950s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Mid-Century Modern, a design movement devoted to timeless functionalism established itself in the post-war period with furniture that appealed to the senses. Furniture design was guided by the famous maxim: “Form follows function.”
For midcentury designers, materials were used for their own distinct; often a piece of furniture would combine only two materials or colours – creating tension and harmony without fuss or superfluous ornament and these fully upholstered lounge chairs are perfect examples of this sentiment. The duality of two materials and colour scheme create an elegant, self-supporting, and enticingly functional design. The combination of solid wood and high-quality upholstery is traditional in mid-century design for a good reason. The two materials complement each other by highlighting their unique material qualities. This pair falls into the category of the so-called biomorphic midcentury: furniture that relished in organic, curved, smooth surfaces, design that was moulded into the shapes of natural occurrences, and which was a lively contrast to the more austere machine aesthetic...
