About the Item
This elegant bench from China's Shanxi province follows the classic recessed-leg form, defined by legs that are inset from the top edge and slightly splayed for stability. Crafted of elm with mortise-and-tenon joinery, this example dates to the early 19th century and boasts a beautiful, timeworn patina. The bench features splayed legs carved with vertical fluting, double stretchers at either end and simple spandrels atop each leg, carved with scrollwork resembling delicate orchid blossoms. The original dark lacquer finish has faded with time, well worn by years of use for a soft texture that highlights the wood beneath.
Sides of apron are replacement.
