About the Item

For your consideration is this Mid-Century Modern bench designed by legendary Italian architect and designer, Gio Ponti, for Singer & Sons, circa 1950s. This rare piece showcases Ponti’s masterful blend of elegance and functionality, featuring solid, richly toned walnut construction and notably elegant carved legs. Approximately 70 years old, the button tufted seat has been reupholstered in its more recent history in luxurious Designers Guild "Mattiazzo" fabric. The diffused floral pattern of the fabric is digitally printed onto jacquard woven velvet, delivering a spectacular touch, texture, and vibrant color intensity. This iconic bench is crafted with the meticulous craftsmanship that defines Singer & Sons’ collaboration with Ponti. Gio Ponti, iconic Italian designer and architect, collaborated with the New York-based high-end furniture manufacturer Singer & Sons in the late 1940s and early 1950s to bring Italian modernist design to American audiences. This partnership, initiated by Joe Singer’s discovery of Ponti’s work, resulted in a series of furniture pieces that blended elegance, functionality, and Mid-Century Modern aesthetics, characterized by clean lines, innovative forms, and high-quality materials.
