About the Item

Large Mecato bench by Sebastian Herkner Materials: galvanized and powder-coated tubular steel. Fibers from Iraca palm leaves. Technique: weaved by local craftspeople in Colombia. Dimensions: W 100 x D 38 x H 45 cm Available in colors: natural/ sand, terracotta/ carne, blue olive/ menta, natur olive/ menta. The light Mecato Bench is a minimalist piece that allows the beauty of Colombian craftsmanship to take center. It’s a design by Pauline Deltour, who found the inspiration for the piece when visiting the Colombian province of Nariño. Suitable for all indoor environments, the stool’s seat is covered with a handwoven fabric made with the fibers of the Iraca palm. Its cover has a slightly corrugated texture, making it very pleasant to touch, and is available in warm earthy or natural colors while the frame comes in three different colors. The bench is also available in a smaller size. Departamento Nariño is located in southwest Colombia, where working with the natural material Iraca has a long tradition. The artesanos weave hats, bags, purses, ornaments and individual one-of-a-kind pieces from the fibers of the palm. The material holds its shape and is very durable. The fibers are dyed using natural methods with seeds, leaves, nuts, and roots and some mineral materials are also used to create different color sections. After the dyeing process, the fibers are drained and need to be left to dry for several days. Only then can the artesanos process the material. With the help of tweezers, needles, and tongs, they weave the seats by hand, using different types of stitching. Just the preparation of all the materials takes five days, while the production of each bench takes nine days. German designer Sebastian Herkner is a long-term collaborator of Ames and has visited Colombia multiple times to experience the country’s cities, nature and people first hand. He also visited many of the ateliers that Ames has partnered with to learn about the unique traditional crafts of Colombia's regions. A sought-after contemporary designer and recipient of many industry awards, he has worked with many international design brands, creating intriguing pieces that showcase his intuition for interesting material, color, and texture combinations.

Biche Bench II, USA, 2022
By Alex Roskin
Located in New York, NY
Todd Merrill Studio has been the exclusive representative of Alex Roskin since 2017. Roskin’s works blend functional design with modernist sculptural references. A natural successor of innovative artists such as Richard Serra, Jean Arp, and Constantin Brancusi, Roskin’s cast bronze, stainless steel, and carved wood works reflects the artist’s modernist and primitive influences. Beginning with a series of quick sketches, Roskin captures the movement of a basic form. By sculpting in foam and wood, Roskin translates that movement into a structural model that is then 3D scanned so that it can then be cast in bronze, aluminum or steel, and finished with carved wood elements. His works often feature a mammalian physicality with heaving sinuous forms and legs that extend from the body in a bowed fashion. Rejecting outright anthropomorphic mimicry in favor of subtle, sculpted muscular forms, Roskin notes: “I try with each piece to create a stance and a presence, some with more contrapposto. I aim to give each piece a feeling it is inhaling or ready to make a move...
