Pair of 19th c. French Louis XVI Style Bergères with Silk Blend Satin Upholstery

This elegant pair of French Louis XVI-style bergères exemplifies the timeless grace of neoclassical design. Dating from the late 19th century (circa 1880–1900), these generously proportioned armchairs feature intricately carved beechwood frames with traces of their original painted finish, softly aged with time. The wide, enveloping backs and padded armrests identify these as classic bergères, designed for both comfort and refinement. The frames are adorned with carved floral motifs, fluted legs, and a scalloped apron—characteristic of the Louis XVI revival style. The upholstery is a standout feature: a richly woven satin fabric, likely a silk blend, with delicate neoclassical patterns including urns, medallions, and floral scrolls in a palette of ochre, gold, and sage green. This elegant fabric reflects the luxurious taste of the late 1800s, although the seat cushions may have been reupholstered later, as suggested by the presence of a zipper, a detail not commonly used in the 19th century. Please note: one of the seat cushions shows visible discoloration and wear on the front (see photos). This imperfection is consistent with age and use, and has been taken into account in the pricing. These bergères remain structurally sound and beautifully decorative—ideal for a refined interior.
