Verner Panton Side / Dining Chairs for Herman Miller, Modernist, 1970's

About the Item

1970's white Panton chairs designed by Verner Panton for Herman Miller. These iconic chairs are made of moulded white plastic in cantilever form, giving them a decorative elegance that is achieved through the sculptural quality. As a result of their moulded form, they are a comfortable seating choice that compliments the human form. On the underside of each chair, the Herman Miller manufacturer's mark has been moulded into the piece. Designed in 1960 and manufactured in 1973, these chairs mark the first instance in which both technique and material define appearance: injection-molded plastic allows for a single-material, single-form chair. These stacking chairs typify the 1960's populist approach to furniture design. It was hailed as a sensation and received numerous prizes. One of the earliest models is now in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Today the Panton Chair is regarded as a classic of modern furniture design. The 1960 stacking Panton chair, the first to be produced from a single piece of molded plastic, brought the Verner Panton international recognition. First shown at the Mobilia club, and given an A.I.D. award in 1968, the chair was designed to give a soft, rather than rigid, support. Originally produced by Fritzs Hansen, it was later put into mass production by Herman Miller. We currently have 3 available, at £500 each.

In these years, Beltzig primarily devoted himself to the design of revolutionary plastic furniture composed of flowing, plant-like forms composed of moulded casts. Originally conceived as an outdoor child’s chair, the Surrealist form of the “Floris” chair...
