Renaissance Style Oak Throne Chair Attributed to Horner
By R.J. Horner & Co.
Located in Swedesboro, NJ
This magnificent Renaissance style oak throne chair, attributed to the renowned American cabinetmaker R.J. Horner, exemplifies the grandeur and elaborate craftsmanship of late 19th-century revival furniture. The richly carved oak frame features an intricately detailed crest with a fierce grotesque mask surrounded by scrolling foliage, embodying the bold character and symbolism of Renaissance design.
The oval upholstered back and generously cushioned seat are framed by deeply carved arms and supports, offering both comfort and dramatic presence. The chair’s sturdy legs are adorned with acanthus leaf carvings and terminate in impressive lion’s paw feet, connected by a cross-stretcher for additional strength and stability. Cathedra or Throne Chair, Late 16th Century, French Second Renaissance, Walnut
Located in BUNGAY, SUFFOLK
A moulded cornice sits above the high, panelled back with fluting and applied roundels. The later, metal pin on the left edge releases the central, moulded panel in the back which retains its original hinges. When the pin is removed the panel can be lowered, revealing a large area behind. The scroll arms are supported by tapering turnings which can be compared with mid-16th century benches of the nave such as those in the churches in Gerberoy and Coivrel which are in Oise, the Piccardie region of Frances.
The panelled, box seat has later 18th century hinges...
