About the Item

An Extremely Attractive And Charming Mid 19th Century, Ash & Elm, Childs Windsor Armchair, Having Elegant Shaped & Pierced Splat To Hooped Back, Over Shaped Seat Raised On Elegant Turned Legs And Stretcher. Childrens, or Childs Chairs as the name suggests were made throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and beyond, often as scale models of their full size counterparts for the children of the family to use in all manner of settings and circumstances. They therefore come of course in a wide variety of scales, shapes and sizes dependent mainly on the age of the children in the family which they were initially commissioned for, combined with the style of the existing furniture within that home. This particular childs chair is of country windsor chair type design and is absolutely oozing character and charm. It is constructed from ash and elm and the timbers have mellowed beautifully over the many years of its life, creating a lovely light effect to the finish. There has been a little movement of the wood over the years, none of which affects the structural integrity of the chair, it is very much fit for purpose indeed, but with the added charm of wood that has moved in various directions over the years. It has certainly been well used and particulalry well loved throughout its life, most recently by my own toddler in the office at the warehouse whilst I process various items of furniture. He seemed happy enough sat in it thats for sure. A great present to the family, or even a treat to yourself for the grandkids to sit in when they visit its difficult to find anything to dislike about this incredibly charming chair which is as fit for purpose as the day it was made. Circa 1840. Height 26.5in. Width 18.5in. Depth 17in. Seat Height 11in.

Made in Buckinghamshire, England circa 1820. A rare and exceptionally well-preserved child's Windsor armchair, crafted in Buckinghamshire, England circa 1820. This charming and finely scaled example exemplifies early 19th-century English vernacular design, made predominantly of richly figured yew wood and ash, with a beautifully grained elmwood seat carved from a single plank.
