About the Item

J. S. Henry Dates: Founded, circa 1880. Wholesale manufacturers in Old Street, London, of light, ornamental furniture from circa 1880 and Art Nouveau pieces of mahogany and satinwood with decorative inlays in the 1890s. Their pieces were retailed through a Paris agent at the 1900 Centennial Exhibition, where they won two silver medals. At the Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society in 1903 the company showed designs by George Walton and W.A.S. Benson. G.M. Ellwood (1875-c.1960) was their most prolific designer, and although they used designs by C.F.A. Voysey, E.G. Punnett and W.J. Neatby, few designers were named. Mahogany (solid) polished, brownish original leather, upholstery button nails, strikingly high backrest with stylised decoration in low relief. Back legs slightly bent, front legs cut downward with widened ends. Low seat and slightly bowed armrests partly upholstered in leather "Trendy phantasy furniture." In the English specialized professional journal "THE CABINET MAKER AND ART FURNISHER (year 1895)" the fashion of the high backrest and low seat was attributed to American influence. In year 1896 it reappeared in the same journal under title "Furnishing fancies" between several drawings of similar bizzare seating furniture. Ref. Exactly same chair is in fundus of the Applied Arts Museum, Vienna, MAK, which was acquired in 1895 from J S Henry for the Trade Museum on price of 5 pounds sterling. In 1897 transferred to "ÖsterreichischenMuseum." Now in the collection of the Austrian Museum for Applied Arts. Inv. No. H 160. Documents: Drawing in the inventory book of the Trade Museum.
