Chair Swirl by Michael Schoner, the Netherlands, 2019. Nilufar edition. Aluminum, power-coated. Measures: 90 x 84 x H 76 cm, 35.4 x 33 x H 30 in. The metal movements of Michael Schoner’s objects are extreme experiments on the theme of seating. They stage seemingly easy and organic displays of balance, standing up thanks to complex engineering calculations that convert flat sheets of aluminium into the third dimension. While a piece of sheet metal curved only in one direction could never support the weight of a human body, the Swirl chair consists of three joined elements in a series of perfectly measured asymmetrical curves.
