About the Item

A low fireside chair (chauffeuse) or stool in stained oak attributed to Charles Duduouyt, with turned, truncated cone-shaped legs floating over recessed feet, turned stretchers, arched rails, and a woven rush seat. This example is a particularly modernist iteration of this Dudouyt design, perfectly-proportioned and with a clear African / tribal influence such that the finial-topped stiles assume a totemic quality. Our favorite feature of the chair is its pure wabi-sabi aesthetic, with no apologies offered for its 80-year history. There are natural but stable wood splits that have occurred over the decades (the long geometric one on the right finial is especially beautiful, with a missing knot to the opposing finial), and a deep, complex patina which we have left untouched, save for a modest touch up here and there and a reinforcing of all joints. The chair is robust and ready for placement in an honest interior setting.
