Chinese Bentwood Roundback Armchair, c. 1850
About the Item
Prior to the 10th century, Chinese society eschewed raised seats in favor of mats. The rising popularity of chairs and other forms of elevated seating led craftsmen to adapt traditional cabinetry and architecture techniques to the human body. In the case of this yuanyi, or round chair, the flowing crestrail is a direct descendant of the simple armrests that had traditionally supported individuals on mats in their homes.
Known also as a horseshoe-back chair or a grand tutor chair, the roundback chair was historically used as a seat of honor and is one of the most recognizable forms of classical Chinese furniture. This 19th-century example features a beautifully curved bentwood railing, rustic bent legs, straight stretcher bars and a thin back splat etched with a floral medallion. A thin layer of lacquer darkens the exterior for a dark red-brown finish.
