"Costes" Curved Mahogany or Grey Oak Plywood Armchair by P. Stark for Driade

About the Item

"Costes" is an iconic armchair, designed by Philippe Starck and manufactured by Driade, with a black painted tubular steel structure and curved mahogany, ebonized mahogany or gray oak plywood finished shell. Polyurethane foams padded seat with black or light colored leather fixed cover. Indoor use only. Available in quick ship. DIMENSIONS: D. 22.8", W. 18.7", H. 31.4", Seat H. 18.5" There are objects universally recognized as icons. Costes easy chair, which in 1984 marked the beginning of the partnership between Philippe Starck and Driade, as well as the consecration of the French designer, formerly unknown in Italy, is one of these objects. Designed for the now disappeared Parisian café of the same name, it owes its timeless success to the absoluteness of forms: a dark wooden embracing structure with three highly tilted legs. PHILIPPE STARCK is an internationally acclaimed French creator, designer and architect. His profound comprehension of contemporary mutations, his determination to change the world, his anticipatory concern for environmental implications, his love of ideas, his desire to defend the intelligence of usefulness and the usefulness of intelligence have accompanied one iconic creation after the other. From everyday products such as furniture and lemon squeezers to revolutionary mega-yachts, individual windmills, electric bikes or hotels and restaurants that aspire to be wondrous, stimulating and intensely vibrant places. This untiring and rebellious citizen of the world, who considers sharing his ethical and subversive vision of a fairer planet as a duty, creates unconventional places and objects whose purpose is to be “good” before being beautiful. Philippe Starck and his wife, Jasmine, mostly live on an airplane or in “middles of nowhere”.

  • "Torquemada" Carved Brushed Oak or Lacquered Beech Armchair by P. Starck, Driade
    By Driade, Philippe Starck
    Located in Brooklyn, NY
"Torquemada" is an armchair, designed by Philippe Starck and manufactured by Driade, with a structure available in the following versions: brushed oak, brushed oak with carved backrest and seat or in matt lacquered textured beech in white, gray, yellow, lavender gray or carnation colors. Backrest element support is in polished or mirror finished cast aluminum. Indoor use only. DIMENSIONS: D. 18.8", W. 21.2", H. 30.5", Seat H. 18.3" Although these pieces of design seem apparently imperfect and unique, the collection is composed of a table and a set of seats: a chair, an armchair and a stool. The latter feature two handcuffs in mirror-polished stainless steel, a detail that is as structural as well as decorative and ironically reminiscent of the imagery coming from the ancient Inquisition and its infamous and fearsome prosecutor. A link that regards the concept as well as the project and explains where the name of this collection comes from. Each piece is also available in a more precious version, in gouged oak...
