About the Item

ABOUT A pair of Paris Metro train seats with teak slats seats and a decorative metal scrolled leg. The legs are attached to a metal plate which can be removed. The back rest leans slightly forward and has a built-in porcelain enamel sign on the back side that reads "Societé du Vierre Etire", along with the roman numeral ll for second class passengers. CREATOR Sprague-Thompson Brand, Paris, France. DATE OF MANUFACTURE c.1908-1920. MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES Solid Teak, Steel, Porcelain, Enamel. CONDITION Good. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor wear. Porcelain lose on one chair. Repairs to corners on both chair-repair date unknown. One chair leg is bent in front denoted in photos. One rivet missing from one chair. Two rivets missing from bottom plate. Bottom plates could be removed. DIMENSIONS H 36.5 in. W 18.5 in. D 17 in. Seat Height 17.5 in., Bottom Plate: W 17.5 in x D 19.5 HISTORY Introduced in 1908, the Sprague-Thompson Parisian metro was the first metro built with metal instead of wood. It only had five cars including 1st class and 2nd class—and it was classified as a historical monument in 1998. These types of metros ran till 1983, when they were replaced by more modern versions.
