Marble Chair by Jonathan Hansen

About the Item

Marble low table by Jonathan Hansen 12 Editions + 1 AP Dimensions: 40.6 x 50.8 x 71 cm Materials: Calacatta marble, architectural bronze, resin SERIES I CAPTUM BIOMORFE is a group of nine sculpture works created by New York artist Jonathan Hansen. Captum is a seized or captured thing, and biomorfe is the Italian form of biomorph, or life shape. The Series is a sculptural exploration of the concepts of captivity and freedom with the central reference point of second century Roman sculpture of the human body. These idealized human topographies, or morphologies, have been abstracted and mapped across the surfaces of solid marble furniture objects. Over the top of the sculpted morphologies sits a layer of cast transparent industrialized resin. The peaks and valleys of the biomorphic surfaces can be seen in varying degrees of clarity, depending on how light meets the resin or at what angle the pieces are viewed. There is a tension between the biomorphic undulation and the material that captures it. This tension creates a perception of frozen movement . . . a coexistence of captivity and freedom. The tables sit on architectural bronze columns suggesting the externally visible structures that hold fragments of ancient sculpture, which together create a sense of flotation. The three biomorphic vases and lamp are free from the captum and sit in contrast to the furniture pieces. The formal quality of the marble juxtaposes with the personal and intimate quality of the human topography. Jonathan Hansen has been designing and fabricating furniture and objects since 2001. He has created collections for Ralph Rucci, Thom Browne, Baccarat, Samsonite, Lisa Perry, Aerin Lauder, L’Objet, Fortuny, and Peugeot, as well as individual objects for collectors. Jonathan’s work has been featured in Architectural Digest, Vogue, The New York Times, Surface, Harper’s Bazaar, Wallpaper, and Vogue Germany. Born in the United States, Jonathan grew up in Canada, England, and Singapore. He studied eighteenth and nineteenth-century furniture at the North Bennet Street School in Boston. The foundation of this classically focused program and craftsman training continues to inform the contemporary trajectory on which his work is concentrated. Jonathan has partnered with the Milan-based factory owner Antonio Rillosi, whose specialization in high quality fabrication in stone and metal were a natural compliment for the production of the Series, whose point of departure was classical Roman sculpture.
