About the Item

Pair of French Turned Wood Chairs with Rush Seats, in the Style of Charles Dudouyt, 1940s A striking pair of French chairs, crafted in the 1940s and attributable to the rustic modernist tradition pioneered by Charles Dudouyt. Their bold, sculptural form is defined by deeply turned legs and uprights, each element carved into a rhythm of rounded volumes that give the chairs an architectural presence. The seats are handwoven in natural rush, providing a warm, tactile contrast to the dark, weighty oak frames. Ladder-backs with gently arched rungs add a note of softness to the otherwise robust geometry. The design is at once primitive and modern, marrying artisanal craft with a sculptural sensibility that places them firmly within the lineage of French mid-century design. Evocative of Dudouyt’s distinctive vocabulary, these chairs embody a sense of rustic monumentality, making them equally suited to a pared-back modernist interior or a more traditional setting where their material honesty can shine. There is a variation in colour in the chairs and seats. One apperas to have had more use than the other. Seat height 45cm
