“It was a continuous process of purification and simplification.” Hans J. Wegner answered when he was once asked how the Danish style was created. Wegner is considered as one of the most creative and innovative Danish designers that played a major role in what today is perceived as the Golden Age of Danish design. Wegner was born in Tønder as a son of a cobbler in 1914. At the age of only 14 he was apprenticed with H.F. Stahlberg in cabinetmaking and not much later he attended the Academy for Arts and Craft in Copenhagen.
Wegners own process of purification and simplification becomes visible in his designs through formalistic minimalism, functionalism and use of light colours. In case of the oak webbing chairs...
