About the Item

Polymorph chair by Philipp Aduatz 2017 Edition of 4 + 2 A/P Dimensions: 43 x 48 x 85 cm Materials: Hand carved cherrywood, oiled and polished The IDEA of the Polymorph Chair is to unify contrary design concepts in a single shape. In the ancient greek language “poly” means “many” and “morphé” stands for “shape”. The term “Polymorph” in this context refers to a design that is composed out of multiple concepts differing in their design vocabulary but yet fusing together into a unified single shape of a chair. The concept for the design is based on research in design history, when reviewing the different languages of form over time, there are two basic ideas recognizable: Minimalist, linear and functional shapes on one hand, and organic and spherical forms inspired by nature on the other hand. These concepts seem to be competing with and alternating to each other. The current trend of minimalism for example can already be observed in the early 1920s in the “De Stijl” movement. The trend of organic design which was popular again in the early 21st century had already been prominent in the 1940´s and 1970´s. These observations lead to the question if there can still be anything new or innovative in terms of the design vocabulary. The design of the chair aims to visualize these reflections into an experimental and sculptural object. The design process started with a sketch of the initial IDEA. After that, a first and very faint computer model was created and the geometry was approximated in section layers. These layers were cut out by CNC-machining and stack laminated. The final shape of the chair was created during the creation process and it is fully hand curved without the use of any computer aided assistance. As Material, cherrywood was selected, it is finished with oil and polished to a final semi-gloss surface. Vienna based Designer Philipp Aduatz (born 1982) creates limited edition functional objects that are highly sculptural in nature. Working with innovative materials and fabrication technologies, Aduatz is very much influenced by scientific matters such as chemistry, physics and Material technologies. His process combines traditional Craft concepts and techniques with cutting edge implements such as 3D printing, 3D laser scanning, CNC milling, and Rapid Prototyping. The experimentation with different materials and their behavior is an important part of his research at the intersection of design and sculpture. Greatly influenced by sculptors such as Constantin Brancusi and Tony Cragg, the designer aims to develop a distinct language of form in each of his pieces, encouraging a new discourse between the object and its user or viewer. .

La Curva Chair by Jaclyn Pappalardo Dimensions: W 40 x D 47 x H 88.5 cm Materials: Douglas Fir. Jaclyn is a designer and maker based in London. Her background in set design informs her creative work as a designer. Colour and texture play an important role in developing each and every project. With a particular interest in the use of seating, Jaclyn looks at chairs not only as a functional object but rather as a study of body, shape and language. Her work incorporates unconventional design techniques that stretch far from traditional craftsmanship. Exploring new techniques and material driven processes such as metal forming and non-traditional upholstery, she builds on similar profiles and repetitive patterns in the aim of creating something timeless. Ode chair by Sizar Alexis Signed and Numered Edition of 12 Dimensions: Length 45 x width 55 x height 74 cm Materials: Burned pine wood The hexagon has more to it than we think, and some of the aspects of this shape are still mysterious. The series is an ode to the aesthetics that I fell in love with in a geometrical sculptural works of art and the interesting perfect form of the historical hexagon. It's fascinating how hexagons are part of our life but fail to realize this. It all comes down to the element that is present throughout our body, and that is carbon. The use of the form dates back to ancient mesopotamia...
