About the Item
Set of four gorgeous chairs designed by Arttu Brummer for Helsinki Univeristy. Restored beech frame with upholstered sheepskin seats. Great vintage condition, patina consistent with age and use. The chairs are sold as a set.
Kaarle Arttu Brummer-Korvenkontio was a Finnish designer and a key figure in the Finnish art industry. He was a teacher at the Central School of Art and Design and, from 1944, its artistic director. The Ornamo Association of the Arts and Crafts Industry has established the Brummer Prize named after him. Brummer set up his own design studio in 1913 after graduating as a furniture designer. He was an active writer and critic. Brummer represented the conservative counterpoint to the functionalist movement of the 1930s, represented by Alvar Aalto, among others. His style was somewhere between art deco and 1920s classicism. Brummer designed interiors for buildings such as the House of Parliament and the new side of the main building of the University of Helsinki.
