About the Item

Thonet chair - original Herbatschek series n ° 243711 - squared seat - in black laquered beech wood and Vienna straw. Very good condition – no restauration - the chair has never been used for sitting. Designed to ensure even load distribution, the large seat and ergonomic backrest help provide high comfort. The Thonet chair adapts perfectly to any type of environment thanks to its classic and timeless design, which will guarantee a unique and welcoming style to your premises. In 1970, the armchairs were marketed by the Herbatschek company which obtained supplies from a former Thonet factory in Poland. Herbatschek was already a Jacob & Josef Kohn dealer in the early twentieth century in Milan. After the war, in the confusion following the separation of the brand between Piltzer and the Thonet family, this retailer continued to sell the chairs under the Thonet brand by buying them from the factory in Poland until they had a lawsuit with Thonet France which claimed the use of the brand. Since then he began to brand products with the Herbatschek name. It closed its warehouse and business in Milan in the late 1980s. Michael Thonet His motto, "bend or break", stems from the stubborn will of this brilliant German carpenter, Michael Thonet, to bend beech wood to make everyday objects, such as chairs. After a period of intense experimentation and several broken branches of wood, Thonet succeeded in his aim. In fact, he discovered that, in order to soften the wood fiber, which is naturally elastic, it was necessary to immerse it in a steam bath at 104 ° (for six hours), then fold it (with the force of four workers) and dry it through a shape of iron (for a further two days at 70 °). After several attempts he thus created the perfect chair: the thonet n.14 with curved backrest and seat in woven straw, a classic model widespread all over the world, exhibited in the major design museums in the world such as the MOMA in New York or the Vitra Museum. in Germany. It was 1859.
