About the Item

The Zig-Zag chair (1934) by Dutch designer Gerrit Thomas Rietveld is one of the earliest examples of a cantilevered solid wood chair. Its four wood boards are connected end to end, giving the structure the appearance of a Z-shaped puzzle. This version by our manufacturer features visible dovetail joints. Made in Italy. Gerrit Rietveld (1888–1964) was a Dutch designer and architect known for his seminal work within the De Stijl movement, creating iconic furniture like the Zig Zag Chair, the Red-Blue Chair and designing the Rietveld Schröder House, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Starting as a furniture maker, Rietveld applied the principles of Neoplasticism, which favored rectilinear compositions and primary colors, to furniture and architecture, emphasizing functionality, modularity, and openness in his designs. De Stijl Movement Principles: Rietveld was a central figure in the De Stijl movement, which advocated for geometric forms, primary colors, and a modernist aesthetic. The Dutch Modernist Painter Piet Mondrian was another adherent to the De Stijl philosophy. This chair is considered such a design classic that it is housed in the permanent Design Collection of the Museum of Modern Art NYC.
