About the Item

A Chinese canopy bed was typically part of a bride's dowry or a gift to a courtesan. It grew to be an important household status symbol, and the subject of rivalry among wives and concubines. Traditionally, beds were central to Chinese everyday life and were very versatile: a bed at night and a seat on which to entertain friends during the day. For sleeping, a canopy bed would have been dressed with fabrics that privately enclosed it. This elegant early 19th century example features a canopy topped with intricately carved panels and flanked with sculptural floral finials. The refined rattan mat is hand-woven in a time consuming, ancient technique. The surfaces of the wood have aged beautifully, but the original peg joinery no longer securely holds the canopy together. Assembly now requires screws. Additional Dimensions: Seat height: 22" Apron to floor: 15.5"
