About the Item

A Chinese Qing Dynasty period elm wood daybed from the 19th century, with carved foo dog guardian lions, bamboo slats and lift up compartment. Created in China during the Qing Dynasty in the 19th century, this elm wood daybed captures our attention with its airy structure and delicate carvings. A rectangular seat made of bamboo slats is surrounded by an open three-quarter gallery topped with carved foo dog guardian lions on one side. Foo dogs were designed to protect from harmful spiritual influences and people. They both are sitting quietly on each side of the slightly inclined section meant to receive the person's head. This part opens up to reveal a small storage area in which the sitter could place his or her belongings. The daybed is raised on four straight legs connected to one another through plain stretchers on the sides. Boasting a nice brown patina, this Chinese Qing Dynasty elm wood and bamboo daybed from the 19th century will be a great focal point in any home, placed in a living room or bedroom.
