About the Item
Wonderful 1970’s Modern set of 5 Founders Furniture Patterns 23 “23366” side or dining chairs with flame stitch fabric & wood frames. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear even if they have been refinished or restored. Specifically, upholstery was shampooed & wood cleaned but both still show some signs of age. Please see photos, zoom in for details, and see long description as they are part of the condition report. SIMPLE. DRAMATIC. FUNCTIONAL. Right out of the “Patterns 23 catalog… The first line states, “Founders thinks modern furniture should be like modern architecture: Simple. Dramatic. Functional. So, that’s exactly how they designed this collection. From a basic form that is bold & massive, yet carefully scaled and balanced. And here you have it folks!!! This is a wonderful set of FIVE Patterns 23 “23366” side or dining chairs. We absolutely LOVE them!!! The front wood legs are straight & square with a slight taper, the back have a slight outward flare, and a lovely apron surrounds the base of the seat cushion. They are wearing (we believe their original) fantastic flame stitch fabric featuring muted colors of pink, beige, & blue on the seat, back, and back cushion bearing beautiful button tufted detail! And.., talk about COMFY!!!! Also, according to the Founders catalog, these Pattern 23 chairs were available in woods including African Bartiki, pecan, walnut, & elm veneers… ALL wonderful woods however, we just aren’t positive which these are composed of… but, obviously, they’re marvelous! They will be great surrounding your game table, breakfast nook, smaller dining table, or even used as extra seating in your living or family room, or even the office waiting area. These chairs are characterized by their tall backs, simple, elegant lines, high functionality, and quintessential Founders Furniture Fabulous-ness!!
Founders Furniture was established as a subsidiary company of Knoll Inc., in 1946. They became an independent company in 1947 under President Edward Thrower. During years of operation, although independent for a short time, Founders Furniture hired iconic designers including David Parmalee, Milo Baughman, & Jack Cartwright. Their designs often incorporated elements of Scandinavian & American Modernism and were characterized by their functional aesthetics, clean lines, and use of superior materials including mahogany & rosewood. Founders was well known for their practical & utilitarian pieces including dressers, tables, cabinets, chairs, and more. Founders was acquired by Thomasville in 1965 and in lieu of the acquirement, Founder’s pieces continue to be highly sought after today.

Founders Furniture Company
Founders Furniture Company was a short-lived 20th-century American brand that produced enduring mid-century modern designs. The company's streamlined dressers, lounge chairs and coffee tables feature solid wood construction and simple but elegant designs.
The history of Founders Furniture Company began in 1946 when it was established as a subsidiary of Knoll Inc., an esteemed manufacturer known mainly at the time for its pioneering workplace furniture — largely owing to the work of visionary designer Florence Knoll — so it launched Founders as its residential division.
During its years of operation, Founders hired celebrated American modernist designers like Milo Baughman and David Parmelee, who created sleek commodes and sideboards in mahogany and rosewood for the brand. Michigan native Jack Cartwright, a designer at Heritage during the 1950s, also worked at Founders as head designer before moving on to start his eponymous furniture company in 1963.
Founders continued operations until 1965 when Thomasville Furniture acquired it. Established in 1904 in North Carolina — home to other iconic mid-century brands such as Drexel and Broyhill — Thomasville expanded significantly during the 1960s and purchased several other American furniture manufacturers.
Today, the timeless styles and exceptional craftsmanship associated with Founders Furniture Company pieces continue to render them desirable even for today’s interiors.

Slatted Steel and Marvelous Modern Appeal!!! This is a FABULOUS set of four dining or side chairs by Shaver Howard composed of incredible clear coated steel frames with straight front and splayed back legs which also create the outer edge of the slatted backs, and they are wearing a greige (beige/gray) textured tweed fabric that will eventually need reupholstered. We never think of that as a negative aspect because we LOVE new fabrics… and think of the ENDLESS and incredible possibilities! Handsome vintage modern Campaign style oak Gentleman’s chest by Founders Furniture Patterns 35. Comprised of book matched oak veneer, six drawers and two double doors with brass toned hardware, and brass plated beading detail. Just what the Gentleman ordered!!! Although, it is suitable for a lady as well!! This Founders Furniture tall Gentleman’s chest is comprised of gorgeous book matched oak veneer and features six full width drawers and two double opening doors, one drawer above the doors and five below. Each drawer is fitted with unique campaign style brass-toned inset handles with brass plated beading around each drawer opening. Iconic Mid-Century Modern Broyhill Brasilia original set of 10 dining chairs, 2 arm and 8 sides. Dark walnut and new dark blue/black upholstery. In fabulous vintage condition apart from one side chair that had a broken back rail that has been repaired by our experienced staff. Please see photos, circa 1962-1970.
Their iconic sculpted design inspired by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer is extremely desirable and sought after. Finding an original set of ten is rare! They have been re-upholstered in a fabric that is an ongoing debate here as to whether it is blue or black. Depending on the light some of us say blue and some say black, but either way, they are absolutely stunning. They are comprised of deep sultry walnut and the backs of the chairs bear the elegant triple Brasilia arches. Their high backs, tapered legs and sturdy frame unify their comfort. These will be wonderful encompassing any dining room table. The Brasilia Collection is Mid-Century Modern in style but borders on Brutalist although it would be beautiful in an Industrial or modern country setting as well.
It is no coincidence that The Brasilia collection design is very architectural in style. It was introduced to the public at the Seattle World’s Fair in 1962 and drew its inspiration from the architecture of the newly created and majestic Capital of Brazil, Brasilia. The brochure for Brasilia by Broyhill Premier says…….”Brasilia…the city…by its daring and beauty has revolutionized architecture and opened vast new horizons of design. From this inspired dream, Broyhill Premier drew inspiration for the furniture grouping which bears the Fine young name: BRASILIA.” This line was extremely popular with the furniture buying public and is still sought out today.
