About the Item

These 3-splat ladder-back chairs are a beautiful and mysteriously unique grouping. Made from hardwood, each of these chairs has been hand-carved with hand-woven herringbone cane seats. With a stunningly warm rich color, the splats have an unusual upward design that join into hand-carved insets in the stiles creating a secure connection. Hand-carved legs are joined with stretchers, most likely by way of soaking and drying for a tight fit that has lasted for two decades. To finish this primitive and smart looking chair, finials finish the top of each stile. The chair's proportions are more unusual than most ladder-backs with lower splat placement on the backs as well as lower seats. The buyer of this set should be thrilled with them in person as they are even more beautiful! These would be perfect in a country kitchen, be that a European style or American primitive design. With very minimal cracking of the cane and some missing on a few chair seat, the seats are in great shape, overall. One chair is missing a stretcher, however this in no way effects the structural integrity of the chair and is difficult to notice.

1700's Chippendale Style Country Ladder Ribbon-Back Maple Side Chairs, Pair
By Thomas Chippendale
Located in Louisville, KY
If these two chairs could speak, the history they might share. These rare and very early chairs are hand-carved and constructed in a refined primitive country design, reflective of the era. Utilizing a stunning, rich maple, the top rails and cross rails flow with ribbon designs for a touch of elegance. The backs of these chairs are more delicate than others of this period and style. Higher, thinner rails and styles found in these chair backs, mixed with the heavy squared legs and wide band stretchers make these an impressive example of an Early American country chair...
