English Set of Eight Elm Spindleback Chairs Early 19th C Two Arms and Six Sides

About the Item

English early 19th century assembled set of eight spindleback elm and ash dining chairs including two armchairs and six sidechairs. These chairs were made in the Lancashire/Cheshire region of England and typically were purchased over a period of time, rather than all at once so there are differences between the chairs, but they all have the same basic spindleback design. The earred top rail is much less common than the typical enclosed top rail and were presumably somewhat more expensive when they were originally made. The turnings were all done by hand by boggers in the woodlands. The bold front turnings of the armchairs are particularly handsome. The seats are woven rush and some have been rerushed over time, but they are all in good condition. In England rush seats were made to have a one inch thick fabric cushion added to the top, this helps prolong the life of the rush and makes the seats more comfortable as well. Circa 1820. The turnings are slightly lighter from use, as is appropriate. Nicely articulated and varied ball feet. Rush seats are in good condition. The measurements below are average for the collection.
