About the Item

Scandinavian Mid Century set of six dining chairs designed by Norwegian furniture designer and architect, Hans Brattrud (1933–2017). Made by Hove Mobler for the Scandia series. Circa mid 1960s. Fabulously stylish and sculptural in design, they are made of laminated beech plywood, and stand on chromed plated steel wire legs. They are surprisingly comfortable. The chairs have their original finish, which has mellowed a little to a lovely even colour. There are a few light marks around the frames consistent with age. It appears a later screw was added at some point which revealed a hole in the back rail, this has been filled. Please refer to photograph number 18. Photographs 15, 16 and 17 show very small filled marks to one chair. The chrome is in very good condition. There is a small area of pitting to one side of the base of a chair, and a scratch mark to note. Please refer to the last two photographs. The last photograph also shows the underside bars have hairlines to two chairs, these do not cause any problem to the stability of the chairs and are only superficial. There are a few marks from stacking, as expected. The plastic gliders are missing for the legs. The chairs are all structurally sound with no damage. Two maker's labels are still present. Hans Brattrud studied at the National College of Art and Design in Oslo where he first invented the Scandia chair for a class project in 1957. In 1967, the stackable chair was awarded the gold medal at the International Arts and Crafts Fair in Munich. After early success, Brattrud stopped making furniture in the mid 1960s and shifted his focus to making prefabricated houses. Additional dimensions information: 52cm wide (at the widest point at the back legs). The seats are 48cm at their widest point. The seats are 47cm high at the front chrome leg. The total are 118cm high when all stacked together.
