About the Item
This elegant suite of six side chairs and matching armchairs were crafted in France, circa 1950. Each chair stands on carved "Os de Mouton" legs (sheep bone), embellished with a serpentine bottom stretcher; it features a tall arched and pitched back and a wide and deep seat. The classic Louis XIV style chairs are upholstered with colorful stripe mohair fabric, and dressed with decorative brass nail heads. The comfortable and sturdy dining chairs are in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorn a rich light walnut patina throughout the frame. The set contains 6 chairs and 2 armchairs with armrests designed for host and hostess at the ends of the table. A couple of them have stains/tears - purchased with the intent of reupholstering
Os de mouton is a design term that refers to the classic, sinuous stretchers that are a defining element of Louis XIV furniture. The shape of the chair legs is based on the shape of the legs of a lamb. The term is translated literally as "mutton bone."
