Designer Maurice Pré (1907-1988) was a distinguished French designer and decorator whose career spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on 20th-century design. A graduate of the prestigious École Boulle in 1924, Pré honed his craft under the tutelage of the legendary Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, where he cultivated a profound appreciation for fine cabinetmaking and elegant, functional forms. This foundational experience instilled in him a commitment to exquisite craftsmanship and timeless design. After Ruhlmann's passing, Pré expanded his expertise through collaborations with notable architects like Laverrière, Patout, Démaret, and Porteneuve, further refining his versatile approach to interiors. By 1935, he established his independence, showcasing his innovative furniture at the International Exhibition of 1937 and regularly exhibiting at prominent Salons, including Decorative Artists and Autumn. A true innovator, Pré was known for his curiosity about new techniques and materials, constantly seeking to integrate them into his designs. He believed in the harmonious balance of pure, logically balanced shapes and volumes, always adapting to the user's personality while subtly guiding their aesthetic choices with his expert vision. Pré's extensive portfolio includes numerous public and private installations across France, Switzerland, Italy, and the U.S.A. He was notably commissioned by the National Furniture to create several sets for the Élysée Palace. Beyond furniture, his creative endeavors extended to carpet design, mass-produced objects, lighting, and even ceramics for the Manufacture de Sèvres, occasionally complementing his interiors with his own pictorial works. From luxurious bathrooms to innovative solutions for complex living spaces, Maurice Pré consistently embraced design challenges, delivering solutions that were both sophisticated and seemingly effortless. His legacy is one of uncompromising quality, innovative spirit, and a deep understanding of human-centered design.
