Midcentury Modern Italian Design Beech & Leather Dining Chairs, 1970s, Set of 4

About the Item

Set of four Italian dining chairs, made in the 70s. They feature a beech wood structure and a brown woven leather seat. The s-shaped backrest, linked with the squared legs, is the main feature of the chairs. The shape and the woven leather remind the Scandinavian design, especially Alvar Aalto's style. Excellent vintage condition. Alvar Aalto was born in 1898 in the small village of Kuortane in Finland. Despite not coming from an artistic background, Aalto developed a passion for drawing when he moved to Alajärvi at a young age. This led him to pursue a degree in architecture at the Helsinki University of Technology. Although his studies were briefly interrupted by the Finnish Civil War, Aalto graduated in 1921, thanks partly to the house he built for his parents. He showcased his work at the Industrial Exposition in Tampere a year later. This marked the beginning of his career, as he opened his first architectural office in Jyväskylä, focusing on small single-family houses. At the age of 26, Aalto married fellow architect Aino Marsio. Their honeymoon in Italy exposed Aalto to the captivating charm of Mediterranean culture, which significantly influenced his future work. Aalto's extensive career encompassed not only architectural projects but also the creation of furniture. This led to the establishment of Artek in 1935, a company dedicated to furniture sales. The Finnish architect passed away in 1976, leaving a remarkable legacy that shaped Finland's architectural landscape. His innovative vision predated the rise of Scandinavian design trends.
