Set of 6 'Sapporo' chairs by Mario Marenco for Mobil Girgi, Italy 1970's
About the Item
A stunning set of six dining chairs designed by the iconic Italian architect and designer Mario Marenco for Mobil Girgi in the 1970s.
Crafted from solid walnut, these chairs embody the refined craftsmanship and sculptural elegance characteristic of Italian modernist design. The walnut frames remain in very good original condition, displaying a beautiful grain and warm, rich tone. Light signs of age and use are present and contribute to the character and authenticity of the pieces.
The rich, warm tones of the wood are beautifully complemented by newly upholstered seats. Each chair has been newly upholstered in a refined linen-cotton fabric by Antoine d’Albiousse Paris, bringing a fresh, contemporary touch while honouring the original design.
With their clean lines, ergonomic forms these chairs are not only functional but also highly collectible pieces of design history. Perfect for a modern, mid-century, or eclectic interior.
Mario Marenco (1933–2019) was a multifaceted Italian talent—an architect, designer, actor, and comedian whose influence extended well beyond the world of furniture design. After studying architecture in Naples and completing postgraduate studies in Stockholm, Marenco opened his own design studio in Rome in the 1960s.
In the world of design, Marenco is best known for his collaborations with leading Italian manufacturers such as Arflex, Mobil Girgi, and Poltrona Frau. His furniture pieces often combine bold, sculptural forms with a playful modernist sensibility, reflecting both his architectural background and his artistic versatility. His work from the 1970s, including pieces for Mobil Girgi, showcases a mastery of form, material, and proportion—particularly through the use of rich woods and organic shapes.

Mario Marenco Sapporo chairs for Mobil Girgi Italy 1970
By Mario Marenco, Mobil Girgi
Located in Roosendaal, Noord Brabant
Wonderful set of Sapporo dining chairs designed by Mario Marenco for Mobil Girgi in Italy in 1970. These chairs are made from Italian walnut with a stunning grain pattern. The seats are original and have aged beautiful, showing a charming, worn-in leather look. What makes these chairs special is their unique design.
They have a hammer-shaped backrest that looks nice and provides good support. The seats are wide and comfortable for long meals. One cool thing about these chairs is how they're put together. Two slim slats go from the top of the backrest all the way down to the bottom, where they connect with a horizontal slat. This design makes the chairs look simple and modern.
Kindly note that the chairs are priced and sold in a set of 6 but we have 12 of these chairs available as shown on the pictures.
