This is a set of (6) chairs. Stunning form and brilliant Kiwi green color make these Mid-Century Modern bentwood chairs Stand out from the crowd. Allow your eyes to flow through the sinuous body of the Bill Stephens inspired chairs. Like Bill Stephens, Alvo Aalto, and Thonet, these chairs have mastered the art of bending wood beyond the laws of physics. Layers of solid maple wood have been laminated and steamed to create seamless arches that strengthen as they bind. The result is a ground breaking aesthetic appeal. While the maker is unknown, the multitude and fortitude of these chairs tell us that they may have been produced by a luxury commercial furniture company akin to Knoll. Look closely at the underside of the chairs, some come with shelves. While bentwood furniture seems sleek and modern, its origins are decidedly, 19th century. Michael Thonet, an Austrian cabinetmaker, and founder of famed Thonet furniture company, debuted his masterful bentwood chair designs at the Great Exhibition of 1851. Thonet made his name by perfecting techniques still used today! To create artful bentwood designs one must steam or soak wood and then bend it over a form template allowing it harden into curved shapes and patterns. Some designs steam solid rods over forms to achieve a look akin to Thonet’s No. 14 chair. More modern makers like Plycraft layered thin sheets of solid wood and laminated them with binders (glues) to create strong, sleek designs. These chairs were created by using Plycraft’s signature steamed, laminated, and bound technique. These chairs are in great original condition. A rare time capsule home treasure. We typically reupholster our fabric finds, but these chairs were in such outstanding condition that we decided to leave the original wool tweed. Not only is the colorful wool fabric a tasteful design choice for any decade, but the lime color is still rich and vibrant with virtually no sun fading. Foam padded seats and sculpted, lumbar supporting curved backs make these chairs even more comfortable than they look (and they look pretty comfee).

Vintage 1980s black and white Neo Deco dining set. The luxurious black marble pedestal base features striking white veins and fields of mystical taupe-gray. It’s almost as if a thunderstorm was captured in stone. Dynamic white bands streak through the blackness like lighting bolts in a storm darkened sky. The 1980s enjoyed an Art Deco revival which came to be known as “Neo Deco.” This dining set is a prime example of the Neo Deco zeitgeist. The graduating arches on the chair backs emulate The Chrysler Building’s crown… an Art Deco architectural icon. The marble base’s silhouette is also informed by Art Deco architecture. The table has been updated with a newer 48″ diameter round glass top. No worry of stains on these vintage white seats. The previous owner was meticulous. In fact, the chair seats were still covered in the original plastic when we acquired the set. The base itself is a work of art, beautifully exhibiting the tenants of post-modern design. It is both decorative and simple. The designer has arranged slabs of sumptuous black marble in descending size, emanating from the center. This array of slabs cumulatively form a diamond shape when viewed from the top.
