20th Century Joe Armchair By Jonathan De Pas, Donato D'urbino And Paolo Lomazzi

About the Item

A beautiful red leather "Joe" lounge chair by De Pas, D’Urbino, Lomazzi for Poltronova, covered in gorgeous soft red leather signed with artist embossed signatures, Poltronova brand logo and 'JOE' embossing. While this is considered a chair, it is large enough to seat two in loveseat fashion or deep enough to sink into and enjoy similar to a chaise. Designed in 1970, this leather "Joe" baseball glove chair is an early production example, by designers Jonathan de Pas, Donato D'Urbino, and Paolo Lomazzi who worked together since 1966 with a specific interest in creating furniture and temporary architecture with industrially advanced materials and technology. The 'Joe' chair is made with heavy duty steel frames and preformed polyurethane foam padding, the cover made from large amounts of very high quality soft leather. 'Joe' is a large and extremely comfortable club chair designed in the form of a monumental baseball glove which is mounted on hidden wheels which make for easy relocation. The designers, who were inspired by Pop Art, gave tribute to the legendary American baseball star Joe Di Maggio with wild exaggeration of scale, transforming the baseball glove into a welcoming place to lounge and a surreal experience of functional modern art to enjoy. This large 'Joe' baseball glove lounge chair would look great in any Mid-Century Modern, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Post-Modern room. EXHIBITIONS: 1970: Joe first presented at the 10th Salone del Mobile, Milan 1972: Italy: The New Domestic Landscape, Museum of Modern Art, New York 2003: 1945-2000, Il Design in Italia: 100 Oggetti della Collezione Permanente, Palazzo della Triennale, Milan travelled to 28 further venues in Europe, Asia and Australia / La Fabbrica Bella, Centro Cultural Justiça Federal, Rio de Janeiro / Altman Building, New York 2005: Italian Beauty 100 Esemplari al Top, Stadio, Florence 2006 50+2Y Italian Design, National Art Museum of China, Beijing 2007 50 Years of Italian Chairs, Innocentre, Hong Kong 2011 Le Fabbriche dei Sogni, Palazzo della Triennale, Milan 2011 Meet Design, Museo dei Fori Imperiali, Rome / Palazzo Bertalazone, Turin 2014 Festival Cortona On The Move, IV Edition, Cortona, Italy 2014 Presentazione Gazzetta dello Sport, Corriere della Sera, Milano 2015 Festival Cortona On The Move, V Edition, Cortona, Italy 2015 Creativa Produzione—La Toscana e il design Italiano 1950—1990, Fondazione Ragghianti, Lucca, Italy 2017 Festival Cortona On The Move, VII Edition, Cortona, Italy 2018 Joeuts à Jouer — Oggetti nella foresta, Istituto Italiano di Cultura, Bruxelles, Belgio 2019 Collezione permanente Museo del Design Italiano, Triennale di Milano, Milan / I–Made — Italian Manufacture Art & Design exhibition, Saatchi Gallery, London / Take a sit, Saatchi Gallery, London / Porto Design Biennale, Palácio das Artes Fundação da Juventude, Porto CONDITION The chair is in original condition. It has had a sympathetic restoration to the seating area where a previous “botched” repair job has been made good by restitching the seam. In the photograph with the hand, it can see this to the right hand side of the hand and also gives an idea of the scale (about 20/25cm in length). Otherwise in excellent vintage condition with original leather upholstery and superb patina, retaining the original branded embossing, please see photographs. 20th Century Italian Giraffa Bookcase / Room Divider By Paolo Tilche For Arform
By Arform, Paolo Tilche
Located in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent
A mid-20th Century bookcase or room divider produced in the 1960s by Arform, designed by Paolo Tilche. Featuring wooden uprights, black painted wood end pieces, adjustable black terminals all of which can be arranged and assembled according to the user’s needs. The design is often referenced as “cielo-terra“ (literally translates to “sky-earth”) because the bookcase stretches from the floor to the ceiling. It has quite a lot of play in terms of the height (from about 280cm to about 310cm) which means it should fit most modern properties. As such, it can be used as a wall unit but also as a room divider, thus offering an elegant and ingenious way of creating zones within a large space or simply an elegant bookshelf...

A 20th Century Italian "Alanda" Coffee Table By Paolo Piva For B&B Italia c.1980
By B&B Italia, Paolo Piva
Located in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent
A B&B Italia coffee table by designed by Paolo Piva, made in Italy around the 1980s. This elegant coffee table consists of a geometric black lacquered base consisting of four inverted pyramidal structures of equal size supporting a thick clear glass table top. The design was an instant success and is already a design classic. Available in a multitude of colour combinations, this particular example has a beautiful clear glass top which together with its black lacquered metal base, gives a sense of light and space to any interior. A contemporary classic. About the manufacturer: the international design company B&B Italia began in 1973 when Piero Ambrogio Busnelli took over C&B Italia, the company he had co-founded with Cesare Cassina. The renamed B&B was thus more of an evolution than a completely new enterprise. Busnelli, who was born in 1926 in Meda in the northern province of Lombardy, was a true visionary in post-war Italy. As a young designer he surrounded himself with other like-minded artists, and later took chances on up-and-coming talents, like Mario Bellini and Gaetano Pesce, who later followed Busnelli to B&B. From the beginning, the company wanted to set itself apart as a strong, modern Italian brand that was based on an industrial model, utilising both high-tech production methods and high-tech materials including plastics and polyurethane foams. It quickly established itself as one of the leading manufacturers of modern Italian design in the second half of the 20th century. Busnelli located the headquarters in Novedrate in Como, near Milan. It was designed in 1972 by the architects Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, who had just finished jointly designing the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the influence is clear. The building’s brave industrial “inside out” aesthetic showcased Busnelli’s willingness to take risks, as well as predict future design stars. In the mid-1970s, B&B Italia launched Mario Bellini’s Le Bambole sofa (1972). The structureless, yet plump couch pushed the boundaries of design and secured a place for B&B Italia at the forefront of the international design scene, and at the receiving end of many prestigious design prizes. The advertising campaign for Le Bambole provoked as many reactions as the design itself, featuring provocative images taken by photographer Oliviero Toscani of the bare-chested model Donna Jordan on top of Bellini's sofa, and was exhibited at Milan’s Salone del Mobile. Since then, B&B Italia has collaborated with some of the world's most renowned designers and architects, including , Mario Bellini, Jeffrey Bernett, David Chipperfield, Antonio Citterio, Naoto Fukasawa, Zaha Hadid, Chris Howker, Vico Magistretti, Jean-Marie Massaud, Gaetano Pesce, Paolo Piva, Richard Sapper, Afra and Tobia Scarpa, Richard Schultz, Ettore Sottsass, Studio Kairos, Patricia Urquiola, Jakob Wahner, and Marcel Wanders, among others. B&B Italia has won four Compasso d’Oro Awards. The first was for Studio Kairos’ Sisamo Wardrobein 1974, and later Bellini’s Le Bambole in 1979, and Citterio’s Sity...
