About the Item
Armchair with Ottoman in Bentwood and Canvas Webbing, Czech Republic, 1930s – Restored
A rare and beautifully restored lounge chair with matching ottoman, designed in 1930s Czechoslovakia. This early modernist set showcases the refined use of bentwood, a hallmark of Central European craftsmanship during the interwar period.
The armchair’s elegant, wavy frame is made from steam-bent beech wood, skillfully shaped into a high, gently reclined back and sweeping armrests. The ottoman mirrors the chair’s curved, airy aesthetic — creating a unified and sculptural silhouette that remains visually light yet structurally strong.
Both pieces feature newly woven canvas webbing, arranged in a clean grid of horizontal and vertical straps. This upholstery style lends a subtle graphic quality to the design, while offering breathable, flexible comfort. The webbing has been completely replaced using high-quality cotton canvas, staying true to the original method while ensuring durability for modern living.
The bentwood frames have been professionally restored — cleaned, lightly refinished, and sealed to enhance the natural patina and grain of the beech wood, without losing their vintage character.
