About the Item

Danilo Silvestrin "Apollo 12" Sphere - 1969 for Gunther Lambert, Germany. Extremely rare seating object for two persons. Designed in 1969, consisting of two acrylic hemispheres which can be hinged together to form a sphere. Covers in silver-colored vinyl, handmade by our master upholsterer according to the original covers. Diameter ca. 110cm when closed - H. 80 cm. D. 90 cm. This object is one of 5 that were ever produced. We rediscovered it after 25 years in a locked warehouse, the tattered hemispheres were refurbished by hand in hours of precision work by a specialist and now shine again in new splendor. We have documented the restoration stages. Danilo Silvestrin designed this icon of 1960s space design for his friend, the german photographer Lothar Wolleh. He furnished Wolleh's apartment, which functioned as a gallery for the works of his artist friends, with a variety of futuristic, transparent furniture. The use of the photographs of Lothar Wolleh, the “Apollo 12” Sphere, was kindly authorized by Dr. Oliver Wolleh (Lothar Wolleh Foundation). The Italian-born architect Danilo Silvestrin was a successful interior designer in Germany in the 1960s/70s with a radically modern approach in line with the living utopias of the time. In Lambert, which at the time specialized exclusively in Plexiglas, he found the producer for his unconventional furniture designs. Silvestrin was close friends with the artists of the Zero Group and pictures by Uecker, Luther and Mack could also be found in the apartments and houses he furnished. Together with them, he was also involved in the design of the legendary Düsseldorf disco Creamcheese. In the age of space travel euphoria, the spherical shape with its multi-layered symbolism corresponded perfectly to the new attitude to life that wanted to leave conventional living behind. Silvestrin also particularly appreciated Plexiglas as a material, as its transparency made people “finally the center of their homes” (Silvestrin).
