Ib Kofod-Larsen, Lounge Armchair "Seal", Produced by OPE, Sweden, 1950s

About the Item

Ib Kofod-Larsen "Seal" A teak and leather lounge armchair, the carved wood frame supporting a shell shaped seat and back upholstered with a beautifully patinated black leather. With a label marked "OPE". Produced by Olof Perssons Fåtöljindustri, Jönköping. Sweden. Circa 1957. Ib Kofod-Larsen (1922-2003) Among the most important Danish architects and designers of the 50s, Ib Kofod-Larsen graduated from the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen. He earned international recognition soon after opening his own studio in 1948. Kofod-Larsen collaborated with the best manufacturers of the period including Christensen & Larsen, Fredericia Furniture, OPE. The Penguin chair, the U-56 or Elizabeth Chair, named in honor of Queen Elizabeth II who bought a pair of this model, or the Seal (Sälen) armchair made for the Swedish company OPE all became icons of 20th Century design. Our armchair is a very well preserved example retaining its original leather upholstery.
