Being one of the most copied designs (and a timeless Classic), we never purchase unsigned Barcelona chairs and we suggest you be hesitant when considering an unsigned example, so of course we were delighted to acquire this fantastic signed Knoll International Barcelona lounge chair by Mies van der Rohe in beautiful black leather over stainless steel frame with black leather straps. This chair dates to 1986 via the attached labels as seen in the photos. This example has a nice light leather patina to the black leather cushions. The black leather straps are in excellent condition with light patina and is not dry or cracking. The frame is in excellent vintage condition with light wear and is stainless steel, which combined with the correct rivets as seen in the photographs, helps to authenticate this as the correct and authentic Knoll International frame to the labeled cushions. The 1980s Knoll International versions were made with an upgraded leather and cushion compared to the earlier models. While some collectors prefer the 1960s and 1970s versions, those often have hardened foam and due to the thinner leather often have greater wear and condition issues. So many prefer examples produced during the later Knoll International years (such as the example in this listing) as they are still early year original production collectors pieces, but they also have upgraded thicker leather and cushions. With this early example of the Knoll International Barcelona lounge chair by Mies van der Rohe, you'll feel pride in that you have the "real thing", and a rare early production example to boot, while your friends boast either a knock-off, reproduction or brand-new production-line versions which do not have the collectability value as the earlier originals such as this one. Considered to be the epitome of modern design, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich originally designed the Barcelona chair in 1929 to serve as seating for the king and queen of Spain in the German Pavilion. This was Germany's entry for the International Exhibition, hosted by Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The frames were made with polished chrome hand-ground and hand-buffed to a mirror finish with leather upholstery straps attached with aluminum rivets. The upholstery is fabricated from a single cowhide with each individual panel being cut, hand-welted and hand tufted with leather buttons. Mies van der Rohe began his career in architecture in Berlin, working as an architect first in the studio of Bruno Paul and then, like Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius, Peter Behrens. In the mid-1920s, he began to design furniture, pieces that he conceived and created for particular interiors. In 1927, he met Lilly Reich, a Bauhaus alumnus who collaborated with Mies on his first versions of a cantilevered chair with a tubular steel frame. The cantilevered chair had a curved frame that exploited the aesthetic, as well as the structural possibilities of this material.
