Pair of Red Velvet 1315 Lounge Chairs Attributed to Bill Stephens for Knoll

About the Item

A lovely pair of lounge chairs, the Knoll 1315 chair, also known as the Stephens Chair, designed by Bill Stephens for Knoll in the late 1960s. They feature a bentwood frame with a contoured form and loose seat and lumbar cushions. The chair is well known for it's comfortable design and is often compared to Saaarinen's Womb chair. The frames construction involves skillfully laminate bentwood and joinery. The chair was originally designed for the Yale School of Architecture's lounge between 1965 - 1967. You won't find a more comfortable chair. Bill Stephens started at Knoll as an assistant prototype builder in 1960, after graduating from Philadelphia Museum School of Art. He worked his way up through the Design and Development Group and became its director in 1971. During his tenure, he oversaw the development of many projects and products, including a number in which he was the principle designer. His major projects at Knoll included the Petitt chair in 1965, which was as much an achievement in technology and construction as it was design. He worked on his own line of seating—the 1300 series or Stephens Chair — from 1965 to 1967. It was in continuous production at Knoll until 1988. This is an opportunity to add a classic mid-century design that is no longer in production. This particular pair of chairs was sold to the previous owner by a very reputable dealer and then professionally reupholstered for them in a Knoll velvet (tomato color way) to match their interior. They were very gently used. There is minor crushing to the velvet in spots and some scratches to the legs (particularly at the very bottom of the legs). See close up images for detail. They are lovely and ready for placement.
