Pair of Tubular Metal Armchairs in Ivory Boucle by Geraldo de Barros, 1970s

About the Item

A pair of sculptural armchairs crafted by the renowned Brazilian architect and designer Geraldo de Barros in the 1970s. Each frame, constructed from black tubular metal, bends with soft, flowing curves, grounding the design in a visual rhythm that is both rigorous and fluid. Their form is complemented by ivory boucle upholstery, whose texture offers a warm counterbalance to the cold industrial frame. De Barros' genius lies in this very contrast—the way the almost machine-like precision of the metal frame embraces the inviting, tactile warmth of the boucle.  A pioneering Brazilian artist, Geraldo de Barros (1923–1998) left an indelible mark across multiple disciplines, including painting, photography, and furniture design. Born in Chavantes, São Paulo, he studied architecture and co-founded the influential Grupo Ruptura, which was instrumental in bringing abstract art to Brazil. In his later years, de Barros shifted his focus to furniture design, crafting pieces that embraced modernist principles while infusing them with his distinctive artistic vision. Condition: Great vintage condition, with light scuffs and marks throughout the metal frames. Additional Dimensions: 22.25"AH
