Rare and Quite Unique Space Age Loveseat by Tue Poulsen for Domus Danica, 1970
About the Item
Seven different danish furniture companies went into a collaboration - Domus Danica - in a very short period in the start of 1970. Tue Poulsen who was a well respected danish ceramist was given an assignment to come up with a line of modern furnitures which should be produced in fiberglass.
Tue Poulsen made a serie of fiberglass furnitures for the danish fair at Bella Center in Copenhagen and the serie consisted of a loungechair, a double loungechair, a chaiselongue, a sofa and a table. They were the eye-catchers of the fair and several of Tue Poulsen collegues mocked him with the space design he had created because at that time fiberglass was not a frowned material.
This double lounge chair - loveseat - is one out of 80 pieces that were ever produced. The amazing voluptures shapes were created in Tue Poulsens ceramic workshop. He was in charge of the whole process of sculpting the chair and with the red glossy finish the chair is indeed inviting you to have a seat and enjoy the 1970s feel of it.
The sought after fabric - which is the original from the date of production - is designed by swedish Marjatta Metsovaara and is called "Perhonen". There are some minor reparations of the fabric and a zipper has been added for easier access to the styrofoam filling.
There is not much story of the chair on the internet or in design books from the 70s, and after doing some research we managed to get in contact with Tue Poulsen who today is concentrating fully on ceramic art and pottery in his workshop in the nothern part of Zealand, Denmark.
Luckily Tue Poulsen kept all the documentation of the chair such as new papers articles, brochures and pictures from the fair and he invited us to have a look in his scrapbook and took his time telling about the design process.
Tue Poulsen was happy to be reunited with his chair and he signed the chair. It was a beautiful day with a walk down memory lane and Tue Poulsen wishes the chair all the best and lots of luck finding a new home.
All the pictures from the scrapbook and documentation will follow the new owner - this is a truly and very unique design piece which tells a beatiful story about danish design.
The chair is in a great condition especially regarding its age - it is patinated beautifully with some marks and chips to the sides of the chair. I
The original beanbag will of course follow the chair but in order to reduce shipping costs the styrofoam filling is not included. As mentioned earlier the fabric has some minor repairs and the fabric is a bit faded on the front. The zipper has been added recently to assure easy accces for the styrofoam filling.

Located in Los Angeles, CA
This very rare fiberglass loveseat sofa is by Tue Poulsen for Domus Danica, circa 1970, and is one of approximately 80 pieces within a collection of fiberglass furniture that were produced for a design exhibition at the Bella Center in Copenhagen Denmark. The cushions have been newly upholstered in dead stock (never used vintage) Pierre Cardin fabric.
This settee sofa, also referred to as a double lounge chair, was accompanied with other living room furniture for this collection which included a lounge chair, sofa, chaise lounge and tables. The voluptuous shapes were created in Poulsen's ceramic workshop, and pays homage to the ceramicists skills and vision in his tenured career as a sculptor and artist.
Included in the photo gallery is a photo of Tue Poulsen with a chair example of the same design. In the same photo is documentation of the chair design and production photos when the chair was originally conceptualized and created, provided by Tue Poulsen to dealer/collector 'Deerstedt' (photo credit also to 'Deerstedt').
