Restored Early Production Wood Frame Zanuso 'Lady' Chairs, 1951, Mohair Fabric

About the Item

Superb pair of fully restored, very early production wood frame 'Lady' lounge chairs designed by Italian architect Marco Zanuso for Arflex, Italy in 1951. The chairs are finished in new 'Musco' , color code '00 / 01' fabric by high quality Dutch manufacturer 'DE PLOEG' UPDATE we have just finished restoring a superb and extremely rare Zanuso four seat elliptical 'triennale' sofa also dating from 1951 , the four seat option is extrenely rare and importantly is finished in matching color 'Musco' color code 00/01 , 100% mohair pile fabric by 'DE PLOEG' so a wonderful complete 1951 Zanuso lounge set is available please check item # LU930118557812 for availability. We also have the stunning matching elliptical marble coffee table with elegant brass base by Michel Kin for Arflex, please see item # LU930118480562. Zanuso's 'lady' chair, 'triennale' sofa and Michel Kin's marble coffee table were often photographed together in original period Arflex catalogs and advertisements. Please see IMAGE 15 . The very early production 'lady' chairs, such as these fine examples, are recognised by their artisan crafted seat and backrest frames made from solid wood which command a premium in the collector market, these early artisan made wood frames were quickly superseded .after only a couple of years. by welded pressed steel frames which were far more economical to produce, these production details are fully documented on page 8 of Baroni's 1981 bible on the history of Arflex 'Arflex 51-81' We can provide a copy of the relevant page which documents this production detail to the buyer. The chairs are signed with the early original Arflex labels which we managed to retain from the original old worn out upholstery during the restoration process. Both chairs have undergone a full ground up restoration, starting by stripping them right back to their bare wood frames. They have been lovingly reupholstered in beautiful 'Musco' , color code ' 01 / 00' 100% mohair pile fabric by high quality Dutch manufacturer DE PLOEG including new rubber seat and backrest support webbing by the original manufacturer 'Pirelli' and new expensive and hard to find latex foam throughout again as per the original specification. The brass legs have been hand polished. We have have not repainted the grey enameled steel leg support frame on the underside of the chair .onto which the brass legs attach in order to keep some visual aspects of authentic age and originality intact, there are small areas of enamel loss but these are out of sight underneath the seat. We have kept full photographic documentation of the restoration process including photos of the stripped bare wood frames before reupholstery as proof,(a few photo's of the restoration process are included in the images including photos of the chairs prior to restoration then stripped right back to their bare wood frames and fitting the new 'Pirelli' rubber webbing to the wood frames, PLEASE SEE IMAGES 17-20.       The 'lady' chair won the Gold Medal prize at the 1951 'IX Triennale' international design exhibition in Milan (please see collage photo 14 ) and the entire cover page of Domus' January 1953 issue was devoted to Zanuso's 'Lady' and 'Senior' chairs. PLEASE SEE IMAGE 15. The 'Lady' armchair was amongst the very first to exploit the aesthetic possibilities made available by Pirelli's new foam rubber and elastic products . The new materials' potential to create soft curves and lightness made it ideal for translating the modern streamlined aesthetic into comfortable seating. • First Edition P32 Lounge Set by Borsani, Early Triangulated Form Wire Base, 1956
    By Osvaldo Borsani, Tecno
Located in bergen op zoom, NL
Stunning, rare early first edition 1956 "32" series lounge set by Italian designer Osvaldo Borsani for 'Tecno', Italy. This set comprises a pair of first edition 'P32' lounge and the extremely rare and rrarely seen matching first edition three seat 'D32' sofa. This early set also still retain their original solid brass 'Tecno' manufacturer's roundels (, the P'32' lounge chairs still retain their early first edition solid brass knurled spring adjusters. See image 5. A rare opportunity to acquire a complete first edition series '32' lounge set. The first edition of this series is disinguished by its elegant triangulated wire rod base which gives the base a sculptural quality that was somewhat lost in the second ediiton where the triangulated wire base was replaced by a more utilitarian and simplified three prong steel base of a heavier guage to replace the strength lost by the removal of the triangulation. This simplification of the second edition reduced overall production costs but in my opinon lost some of the visual appeal of the first edition chairs. This set have had their upholstery completely restored with new high quality Pantera foam and new rubber support webbing by the original italian manufacturer PIRELLI. The chairs and sofa have been finished in lovely high quality ' A perfect flower' fabric by italian textile manufacturer DEDAR. 'A perfect flower' by DEDAR has a hard-wearing wool texture poised between the perfect regularity of its warp and weft weaving and the natural exuberance of ondé yarn which ripples its surface. The black enamel finish on the chair bases and sofa legs have been left in their original condition to maintain some visual original period authenticity to this rare early set, these could easily be repainted should the buyer wish to do so. We have also left the brass hardware in its original patina for the same reason but these could also be polished. The 'P32' lounge chairs was presented in 'Tecno' manufacturer catalogs as a "swivel armchair with automatic repositioning mechanism, metal frame , adjustable back and spring, foam rubber padding and interchangeable covers available in a broad range of colors" This ingenious automatic repositioning mechanism means that you when sat in the seat you can swivel the chair through any angle between 0- 360 degrees for ease of conversation etc however when you stand up the seat will automatically return to its original position in order to "maintain order in the room". Dimensions: Lounge chairs:- 84 cm wide x 75 cm deep x 80 cm high, seating height 40 cm 33.1" wide x 29.5" deep x 31.5" high, seating height 15.7" Sofa:- 190 cm wide x 75 cm deep x 80 cm high, seating height 40 cm 74.8" wide x 29.5" deep x 31.5" high, seating height 15.7" LITERATURE: The 'P32' lounge chairs are published in :- 'Osvaldo Borsani', Gramigna and Irace, pg. 278-279 Domus, issue number 342, May 1958, , page 15 The 'D32' sofa is published in:- RIVISTA DELL ARREDAMENTO ,issue number 56, 1959 (original full page Tecno advert ) RIVISTA DELL ARREDAMENTO, issue number 115,1964 page 27...
