About the Item

Introducing a newly restored set of iconic Model C140 "Playboy" Chairs designed by the influential Jens Risom. The "Playboy" derivation was coined after a July 1961 Playboy article on influential Mid-Century furniture designers featuring Jens Risom standing next to the C140 the chair. These superb Model C140's have been freshly re-upholstered in a rich, vintage-feeling canary yellow velvet that perfectly offsets the rich, variegated woodgrains of the solid black walnut frames. Jens Risom is widely considered to be a pioneer in introducing Danish modern furniture to the United States through early work with the Knoll company and to a greater extent through his own company, which thrived in the 1950s and ’60s. Born in Denmark in 1916, Risom emigrated to the U.S. where he teamed up with Hans Knoll to start a decades-long collaboration between the two icons. Risom served in World War II under Gen. George Patton and upon his return to the civilian world he founded his own company, Jens Risom Design, in 1946. Jens Risom Design produced a long line of accomplished pieces that ended up in such places as the Oval Office and his "Risom Lounge Chair" is a part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Throughout his life, Risom stayed true to the fundamental Danish approach to modernism, with its emphasis on traditional values and the human necessity for warmth, beauty and simplicity. This exceptional set of Playboy chairs is as much a piece of history as it is a piece of functional art and are ideal for both home and office settings. Perfect for designers and collectors alike this set can blend seamlessly against a myriad of design backdrops from Atomic to Mid-Century Modern to Industrial. Make them yours today and enhance your office or home's aesthetic with this original American heirloom. ---Dimensions--- Width: 24 in / 60.96 cm Depth: 22 in / 55.88 cm Height: 32 in / 81.28 cm Seat Height: 18 in / 45.72 cm Arm Height: 26 in / 66.04 cm This set of iconic "Playboy" chairs has recently undergone a partial restoration process featuring new upholstery. The solid American black walnut frames and legs are in original, vintage condition and show only minor nicks (the worst of which can be seen in the detail photos provided) but showing no deep scratches, stains or other wear whatsoever. The upholstery, redone in a fabulous, vintage-feeling canary yellow velvet, is in showroom condition. This eye-catching set of "Playboy" chairs is incredibly comfortable, structurally sound and ready for a lifetime more of use thanks to their recent restoration. Please view all photos and video for details on this set's current condition. We're limited on the amount of media we can post so additional photos and videos are available upon request.

Pair of Vintage Midcentury Restored Jens Risom Lounge Chairs

Jens Risom`s career has spanned nearly sixty years. He began his study of design in the Copenhagen workshop of Kaare Klint in 1935 and joined Ernst Kuhn`s architectural office in 1938, where he designed furniture and interiors. In 1939, Risom emigrated to the U.S. and in 1941 designed the first chair manufactured by Knoll. Risom described the chair as "very basic, very simple, inexpensive, easy to make." The chair was constructed with a birch wood frame and, because of wartime materials constraints, cheap but strong army surplus...
