About the Item

Pair of Sonna Rosen "Sunfeather" lounge armchairs in exceptional condition. These timeless chairs were designed initially by Rosen in 1948, and the ones available are early 1950s editions. Crafted in black lacquer by Nässjö Stolfabrik of Sweden, these chairs have recently been re-lacquered, bringing them back to their original beauty. With an arm height measuring 25.5", these armchairs are both stylish and comfortable. Sonna Rosén studied at the prestigious Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts, and Design in the 1940s. After graduating, she joined Carl-Axel Acking's architectural studio and focused primarily on textile design. ‍ One of Rosén's most notable achievements was her design of the Solfjärden (Sunfeather) chair, a modern take on the traditional stick-back chair. Manufactured by Nässjö Stolfabrik, this chair was initially created for retirement homes, emphasizing easy sitting and rising. However, its lightweight construction, superb comfort, and well-balanced design quickly made it famous in private homes and public spaces. ‍ Rosén's design gained international recognition, alongside the work of Bruno Mathsson, becoming one of the few Swedish furniture pieces to achieve such fame abroad. The Museum of Modern Art in New York awarded the Solfjädern chair with the esteemed Good Design accolade in 1952. Since 1993, Swedish manufacturer Gemla has been producing this iconic chair. ‍ In a tribute to her talent and influence, Rosén's work was featured in the 2019/2020 exhibition Female Traces at the Museum of Furniture Studies in Stockholm. Sadly, Sonna Rosén passed away in 2007 at the age of 87.
