Zanuso 'Senior' Chairs, Rare Early Examples with Wood Frames and Ottoman, 1951

About

These rare very early examples of Zanuso's 'Senior' chair are identified by their artisan crafted wood frames , please see images 9 and 10 taken during the restoration process. These early wood frames were very quickly superceded by the far more cost effective industrial welded, pressed sheet steel frames. These production details are confirmed on page 8 of Daniele Baron's tome on the history of Arflex entitled 'Arflex 1951-1981' which was published in 1981.

Wood frame 'Senior' chairs such as these, from the very first few years of production, command a significant market premium with collectors and museums. We managed to save the original early Arflex fabric labels from the original fabric on all three pieces and they have been resewn onto the new fabric in their original position.

Both the pair of chairs and the single ottoman have had their upholstery completely restored to the original specifications starting by stripping each piece right back to its raw, bare frame, please see image 10. The original old dried out and crumbling foam has been replaced throughout with new, high quality and expensive latex foam as per the original specifications. Latex foam is realtively expensive and difficult to find today, it breathes naturally and is extremely comfortable and durable. In addiiton all the rubber support webbing on both chairs and the ottoman has been renewed throughout, again we used rubber webbing from the original manufacturer Pirelli in Italy which is more expensive than after market suppliers but the extra quality, durability while also maintaining originality is worth the additional costs involved. Both the chairs and ottoman are finished in matching high quality, Danish 'TONICA ' 100% wool fabric from Kvadrat.

The larger 'senior' chair was the more commodious big brother to Zanuso's equally iconic and beautiful 'lady' chair and bith designs complement each other perfectly.

The entire cover page of Domus' January 1953 issue was devoted to Zanuso's 'Lady' and 'Senior' chairs. Please see image 8.

Dimensions of the single ottoman: 21.65 " x 20.85 " x 13.75 " high or 55 x 53 x 35cm high.
