About the Item

A graceful and historically significant bentwood rocking chair by renowned Viennese furniture makers Jacob & Josef Kohn, dating to circa 1900. Crafted in Austria, this sculptural piece is a hallmark of the Art Nouveau movement, featuring flowing organic lines, a deeply curved silhouette, and a richly embossed decorative backrest. The chair showcases beautifully steam-bent oak wood, complemented by an intricately tooled seat and back panel with a stylized Green Man motif, floral scrollwork, and ornamental shields. The fluid curves of the arms and rockers exemplify the technical mastery of Kohn’s workshop, whose work paralleled and occasionally collaborated with Thonet. Marked with the original J&J Kohn paper label, this collector’s piece represents the height of early 20th-century Viennese design—ideal for period interiors, museum collections, or as a sculptural accent in eclectic spaces.
